Day 94 MIT Sloan Fellows Class 2023, Reflection of Fall semester

I have already finished the Fall term, so I completed the half of Sloan Fellows program including the summer term. The remaining contents are IAP and the Spring term.

Time flies!!

My strategy

I have three study pillars before coming here.

  • Entrepreneurship
  • Finance
  • Global leadership

I am a company-sponsored student, and all three topics are relevant to my company and my industry. The advertising agency is a collection of entrepreneurial independent groups rather than a single/consistent enterprise. Our biggest and unique ability, creativity, makes our organization more fragmented.

So I want to equip myself with the abilities to nurture intrepreneur ecosystem in my company, accelerate more flexible investments, and lead multinational teams of various business units.

Here is a brief summary of what I learned this term.

Entrepreneurship

I learned the following things through 15.390 New Enterprises and 15.387 Entrepreneurial Sales.

  • Team, team, team. Nothing more than that.
  • Starting from PMR and never finishing PMR. (Primary Market Reserach)
  • The balance between consistent passion for your dream and flexible strategy is important.
  • A lot of commonalities with agency creative work in the advertising industry. We realize unrealistic ideas in 2-3 months campaigns. We did a lot of PMRs.

Challenge

The big question from me is the advantage of intrepreneurship against entrepreneurship. I can pick up a lot of drawbacks of intrepreneurship, but can not introduce essential advantages. Also, in 1970s-80s, there were a lot of spin-off companies such as MUJI from SEIYU, but I am not sure there have been any remarkable spinoffs in the last ten years.

Finance

I took three courses, but 15.401 Managerial Finance was extremely helpful for me to take the first step of finance world.

The concepts and formulas I learned were only a few pages long if I summarized very well. It was exactly the same as the books we had read many times in Japan and I have read this book over five times. However, I recognize that I did not understand anything about finance after this course.

To slow down studying and interpreting information through discussion and actual excel work would truly equip you with finance skillsets.

Also, 15.414 Financial Management also helped me to connect many financial concepts to actual business cases and make my knowledge more practical.

Challenge

I want to study some authentic methodologies to analyze multinational conglomerate.

Global Leadership

This is my top priority and I believe that I have already learned a part of it with my past international experience, but not systematically.

15.325 Seminar in leadership taught me there is no single leadership style dominating any situiations. However, there are some principles I can follow and demonstrate from many remarkable leaders. In this term, I studied how to demonstrate leadership through better communication in 15.284 Strategic Leadership Communication. It depends on your character, personality, environment, team, and strategy.

Above all, the relationship and network in the program nurture my international leadership most. Sharing any moments with global leaders, reflecting yourself again and again, and understanding other people deeply, all of them are incredible opportunity to grow up.
