Day 129 MIT Sloan Fellows Class 2023, The art of leading "Observe jazz session and mindset"
Today is the first day of the class, the Art of Leading. This class uses the MIT Leadership Capabilities model with processes from arts and design using cases, discussion, and experiential sessions that translate the capabilities into practice.
Jazz session
At the beginning of the class, we observed a jazz session by three experts(drum, bass, and piano) carefully and tried to find out some insights for leadership.
The first play was a fantastic short session.
In the second play, a professor asked them, "play exactly the same one."
In the third play, he asked them, "play the same song differently."
In the fourth play, "play the same song different differently."
After several iterations, finally, he asked, "please play the random seven songs requested by the audience?"
We observed the following points as an example.
- How did they communicate and engage with each other?
- They did some quick demonstrations as business people did pitch to introduce their ideas.
- They seemed to respect each other and smile.
- What is their style of performance?
- Very flexible. Not aim "perfect performance"
- Welcome uncertainty and any happening
- How about the speed to align with?
- They align with planning very quickly in the later performance.
After those discussions, we talk about "knowing zone" and "not knowing zone" with pros and cons in each field.
Ability to change
Why Mindset Matters | STANFORD magazine
In the whole session, professor highlighted the importance of the ability to change.
Stanford article summarized necessary mindsets to change yourself, which is called growth mindset.
