Day 112 in MIT Sloan Fellows Class 2023, Choice point 3 "Antigone"
Story
This is one of the most famous Greek stories, and many people have already read the prequel, Oedipus.
Characters
In this class, the professor highlighted two leading roles, Antigone and Creon. They both have powerful personality and their own beliefs. In the course, we discuss their starting proposition and their philosophy. Then, we talked about their vulnerabilities and some measures to avoid tragic consequences.
Creon
Creon is the symbol of the following concepts.
- national security
- discipline
- solidarity
- consistency
However, he has critical vulnerabilities, but he never admits them.
- vulnerabilities
- fear
- arrogant
- stubborn
Antigone
In contrast, Antigone has strong beliefs as follows.
- Love
- Humanity
- religious thinking
- individualism
As a vulnerability
- lack of practical thinking
- stubborn
- short-term thinking
- suicidal ideation
To prove this weakness, she invited her sister into a hazardous activity (burying her brother.).
Key Point
Then, the point is how to avoid tragic consequences.
There are some resolutions.
- Accept your vulnerabilities
- Propose modest resolution(do not extreme)
- Leverage the wisdom of others
- Reflect yourself with enough time
- System thinking
- Develop leadership with some non "yes-man."
I just wondered comMITment session "The U.S. department of state's work to combat global inequality" yesterday. In the session, Jesica Stern, the US special envoy to advance the human rights of LGBTQI+person, said,
"US does not have any correct answers about LGBITQI."
This is a courageous confession. However, this kind of skeptical mindset towards yourself and more comprehensive experience really gives you the to resolve any kind of problem.
