Day 104 in MIT Sloan Fellows Class 2023, Leadership special seminar "Leadership presence and storytelling"

We had a leadership session with Rob Salafia.

The author of "Leading from your best self"

Three principles for leading in virtual or hybrid environment

  • Get present
  • Get personal
  • Get productive

The first two things are pre-requirements for being productive.

Getting present is easy to be said, but very difficult to achieve.

You need to be 100% fine mentally, emotionally, and physically. That's the starting point.

Taking care of "others"' presence.

Joshua Margolis, HBS said

Leadership is about how someone else experiences themselves in your presence.

The important thing is don't feel small and don't make others feel small.

You need to create an environment that allows people and ideas to thrive.

Be present and open

You need to express your presence and openness by your voice, appearance and speech.

The power of intention has a huge impact.

We practiced it with "Friends, Romans, Countrymen and Lend Me your Ears framework".

  • Friends: To connect
  • Romans: To Rouse
  • Countrymen: To Engage
  • Lend me your ears: To Plead

Storytelling elements

  • Set the scene
  • First person - present tense
  • Sensory Details
  • Vocal Flexibility
  • Facial and Physical expressiveness
  • Feeling and emotion
