What "culture" means

Culture refers to the symbolic or expressive side or human life - actions, objects and ideas that carry specific meanings to particular people and groups and hence stand for something.

MIT has a strong culture

MIT is well-known for its strong cultural organization.

For example, Tim.

Beaver

Why MIT set its mascot a beaver?

It is because beaver is a great engineer in nature.

"Mind and hand" is another cultural motto at MIT.

Not only a symbol, but we have some interesting activities, habits as well.

Yes. Smoot.

So, all these activities come from "culture".

What builds culture?

There are several components consisting of culture, and vice versa.

  • History
  • Habits/activities/ceremony
  • Identity
  • Symbols

The important issue here is we need to control culture and open-minded for diversity. Strong culture sometimes excludes other cultural thinking etc.
